What does this girl have in common with this two-time Olympic gold medalist and about everything that seems to make my head swing these days?
Sweden.
Under 10 million people and the country’s still everywhere. OK, it’s already invaded most homes in the developed world thanks to one of its richest men’s obsession with naming household goods things like Yngslö and Tvåblad (hey, a guy who can successfully create a global reputation for selling bookshelves and meatballs is a winner in my book). The latest place Swedes are invading though? My iPod.
With oldies like Abba and the Cardigans being replaced by the likes of Lykke Li, the Knife, Fever Ray, Kleerup, José González, Nora, O’Spada, PB&J, Air France, and the Radio Dept. among others, the Vikings aren’t just on the global musical maps - they’re dominating it. Sweden is even thought to be the world’s third biggest music exporter, behind only the US and UK.
That’s a pretty hefty list - and here’s a way to make it longer: Swedes Please is a blog on all things musical that side of Malmö. I’m not sure if Peter Forsberg (our gold medalist, above) can sing as well as he can shoot a hockey puck, but there seems to be something about the land of three crowns that breeds musical greatness. Rock on Sverige.
