Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.
“How you doing?” Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I answer “good, thanks” without thinking twice about it. Saying or projecting happiness is both easy and appealing. When it is a distortion or incomplete image of the truth though, in terms of your wider mood or feelings, it is disappointing and unattractive.
What makes me like KiD CuDi’s latest treat is that it goes against the dance/party focus I’ve previously associated with him. Jason Goldwatch’s video juxtaposes images of CuDi’s public/stage life against his introspective lyrics in an ironic and thought-provoking way. He gives you perspective and makes the viewer think about the background to the partying — regardless of whether it’s escapism or a release of positive energy.
“Soundtrack 2 My Life” isn’t the most profound song around but it’s one about depth — and I’m glad it is because I feel that’s exactly what can be missing in twenty-four hour club culture. Coming from an unexpected source, I now have CuDi to thank for a musical reminder to think through the beats and wonder about who these clubbing kids (myself included) really are.
